Mersin Is Back
Following a long hiatus since 2018 when it was last staged, International Mersin Marathon is set to reemerge on 10 December.
Within the short period of four years from 2015 to 2018, the International Mersin Marathon had been first granted the Bronze Label, then upgraded to Silver by the world’s governing body in athletics. The event, in an attempt to change its season, was postponed from December 2019 to March 2020, however, it could not be held due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The following two years, 2021 and 2022, were also subject to cancellations. Returning to the running stage with a World Athletics Elite Label on 10 December, the race is moved on a flatter and faster course. In its first four editions, the women’s fastest time in Mersin were achieved by Kenyan Truphena Chepchirchir with 2:28:47 in 2017, and by her compatriot Kenneth Kiplagat Limo on the men’s side by 2:10:12 in 2018.
5th International Mersin Marathon includes a 10km race and a Public Run over 5km on the day. Detailed information and registration system can be accessed at www.mbbspor.org. Timing services at the event will be provided by Depar Timing.

15th Year in Tarsus
The 15th edition of the International Tarsus Half Marathon will be held on 22 October. The deadline for registration is soon.
Inaugurated in 2004, International Tarsus Half Marathon had gained a seat among the road races in Turkey with its high quality despite the interruption in the years 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Thanks to its fast course, the race attracted many outstanding international athletes during the 14 years it was held. Men’s course record of 1:02:05 dates back to 2007, set by Kenyan Wilson Kipsang Kiprotich who won the marathon bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games, then went on to break the world record by 2:03:23 in Berlin the following year. Women’s course record was broken by Pauline Esikon of Kenya in 1:08:17 in 2021.
Mersin Metropolitan Municipality, the organiser of the event, increased the winners’ awards to 50 thousand Turkish Lira this year. Master athletes who make the podium will also pocket cash prizes starting from 7,500 Lira. The event includes a fun run over a distance of 5km as well.
Registration with the race is possible at http://www.mbbspor.org until 16 October. Race timing in Tarsus will be provided by Depar Timing.
