Bezabeh and Chepngetich Victorious in Adana

Ethiopian Belay Tihaun Bezabeh raced to victory in 1:03:34 at the 7th International Adana Half Marathon. On the women's side, it was Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya who took the honour by a lifetime best 1:09:56.

Bezabeh, who remained in the leading pack from the start, reached the 10km mark with his compatriot Fetene Alemu Regasa and Kenyan Jameson Kabuku Wangechi. Shortly after this point, Regasa and Wangechi started to fall of the pace. Bezabeh passed 15km as solo leader, while Wangechi followed 150 meters behind with Regasa more than 200 meters in deficit. With no other takers for the win, the Ethiopian continued building his lead and finished with 1:03:34. Wangechi was second in 1:04:43, and Regasa took the third place by 1:05:34.

Women's competition was contested among the Kenyan trio Ruth Chepngetich, Angele Jesmunde Tanui and Veronicah Njeri Maina. Chepngetich sliced more than two minutes off her personal best to win in 1:09:06. Tanui was a distant second in 1:09:56. Maina passed the finish line in 1:10:20 to claim the third place.

    Depar Timing in Adana

Our team to time the 7th International Adana Half Marathon is making the final preparations on site. The race records will be under threat on Sunday, 8 January.

A total of 12 members of the Depar Timing Team will make their best efforts to serve the Adana Half Marathon. This is the fifth edition of the Event that our services are utilised.

Africans have been dominating for the last four years in Adana, and this year is not expected to be different. Two African women who ran under 1:08 recently will be participating on Sunday. Ababel Yashaneh Birhane, last year’s winner here, had run her personal best of 1:07:52 in New Delhi this past November. The Ethiopian is no stranger to the course but she will face strong challenge from Angele Jesmunde Tanui of Kenya who finished in 1:07:16 in Rome Ostia ten months ago. The women’s race record is 1:08:53, set by Kenyan Rose Chelimo in 2015.

On the men’s side, the pre-race favourite is Jameson Kabuku Wangechi. The 20-year old Kenyan finished the third half marathon of his career in a personal best time of 1:01:49 in Hague in March last year. His compatriot Benard Cheruiyot Sang, who made his first appearance on the Turkish soil at the 15km event of Istanbul Marathon in 2010, is another outstanding participant. Men’s record is held by Barselius Kipyego with 1:00:46, standing only from last year.

7th International Adana Half Marathon will start at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, 8 January.
