New Era In Global Road Races
IAAF made changes to the Label Road Races Regulations valid from next year. The new system includes a Platinum Label category.
The classification of road races was first introduced by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) in 2008 in order to ensure high standards in the world’s leading events. The system will run over three categories, Gold, Silver and Bronze, for the last time in 2019, and the top tier will be the “Platinum Label” starting from 2020. Organisers who wish to apply for a Platinum Label need to fulfil the required criteria in 2019. The criteria for the Platinum category comprises all those set for the Gold Label but additionally requires at least 15,000 finishers in the distance for which the application will be submitted. The regulations also include the condition of at least 5% of the finishers to come from foreign countries, a provision that was never sought in previous years.
To be able to apply for an IAAF Label, each race must have a minimum of 6 men and 6 women elite athletes. The term “elite athlete” no more defines an athlete who achieved a certain performance at a single race. The IAAF will determine, and publish by the end of the year, the rankings of the current year based on a scoring system, and the athletes ranked 1 to 100 will have Gold status, 101 to 230 Silver, 231 to 400 Bronze throughout the following year. All athletes eligible for Gold status will need to apply, directly or via their representatives, for a “Gold Label Licence” with the IAAF. A precondition for obtaining a Gold Label Licence is the payment of an “Integrity Fee” to the Athletics Integrity Unit, an independent organisation that manages all threats to the integrity of the sport on behalf of the IAAF. Athletes with Gold Label status failing to obtain a Gold Label Licence, will be downgraded to Silver status.
Races who seek an IAAF Label must send an application separately for each edition of the event. In 2018, four races from Turkey hold such labels. İstanbul Half Marathon in April and the Istanbul Marathon to be held in November were both granted Gold labels, and Darıca Half Marathon in October as well as the Mersin Marathon scheduled to December were granted Bronze labels.

Tenth Year With İsmail Akçay
10th İsmail Akçay Road Race will be staged on 9 September. The race of nearly 12.5km is limited to 550 participants this year.
Organised since 2009 in the name of the legendary Turkish marathoner, İsmail Akçay Road Race has a new race course this year. The race will start and finish inside of the Balıkesir Atatürk Stadium. The distance of 12km from last year consequently increased for about 500 metres. The Organising Committee also limited the race to 550 participants, that is 150 women and 400 men, in order to provide a safe and smooth event. Registration is possible until 16:30 on Saturday, 8 September via the official website of the Turkish Athletic Federation at www.taf.org.tr.
Besides numerous national and international achievements during his career, İsmail Akçay well deserved a seat of honour in Turkish sports history with his fourth place in the marathon in 1968 Mexico Olympics. Akçay, 76 years of age, will once again attend in person to the event staged in his hometown, Balıkesir.

Entries Close on 29 August In Eğirdir
Eğirdir, a district in Isparta, keeps on the tradition that started in 2003. Eğirdir Triathlon is scheduled to be held on 1-2 September.
The event, organised by the Turkish Triathlon Federation and hosted by Eğirdir Municipality, includes all age categories from the cadettes to seniors as well as the paratriathletes. The swim leg will be staged in the Lake Eğirdir, the fourth largest lake in Turkey with an area of 482 square kilometres, and the race will continue on the shores of the lake.
The entries are carried out by filling in a form published at the official website of the Turkish Triathlon Federation, www.triatlon.org.tr. The deadline is 22:00 Turkish Time, Wednesday 29 August. Timing services in Eğirdir Triathlon are provided by Depar Timing.

Swimming From Island to Island
Istanbul is the home for the 8th International Arena Aquamasters Swimming Championships. The two-day event includes an inter-islands race.
The Prince Islands will host the Championships on the 4th and 5th of August. The relay meet to be held on Saturday will be followed by the race from Burgazada to Heybeliada on Sunday. Teams of four male, or four female, or mixed teams of two male and two female swimmers will compete at the “Setur Marinas 4x500m Relay Meet” scheduled to 16:00 on Saturday, 4 August. At 9:00 on Sunday, the participants of the “Peugeot Open Water Swimming Championship” will be transferred from Heybeliada to Burgazada where the race will start. Swimmers will jump into water for two events in different distances, a 1,5km and a 3km race, starting at 9:30 and 9:45 respectively. The finish is at Heybeliada for both races.
The Istanbul leg of the International Arena Aquamasters Swimming Championships is organised in collaboration of the Turkish Swimming Federation, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Istanbul Directorate of Youth Services and Sports, Heybeliada Water Sports Club and Burgazada Water Sports Club. Timing services for the whole event will be provided by Depar Timing.

Swimmers Head To Çanakkale
Çanakkale Strait, also known as the Dardanelles, will host the first edition of the Troy Open Water Swimming Race on Sunday, 29 July.
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Troy’s entry into the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List, Turkish Sports Foundation is organising the Troy Open Water Swimming Race, which is planned to be held annually. The participants will stroke from the Second Kordon to Kepez Municipality Beach. The race course of an approximately 5km distance passes over the sunken Mesudiye Ironclad, lying 12 meters below the sea surface since the Battle of Gallipoli during World War 1.
The entries are limited to one thousand swimmers on the first year of the event. The race will include twelve age categories in men and women each, and the timing services will be provided by Depar Timing.
